Who among us hasn't at one time or another worried that one or more of our favorite authors might seem to be "losing it?" You know the feeling. You put down a book and say "this story wasn't up to what I've come to expect from this writer." And of course, often it will be a big name. Someone whose name was enough to sell you on a new book without even reading a review. So, have you or have you not, resolved to avoid automatically scooping up the next offering from this writer? I know I've certainly had that experience, and have resolved to avoid making the same mistake next time.Well folks, not to worry. We have a new name to remember. One who seems to have all the talent in the world. "Sins of a Nation" by Don McGraw is a story that ranks right up there, fresh out of the box so to speak, with some of the best of the usual suspects.
What we have here is a very cleverly constructed plot, peopled with entirely believable characters. And the story is definitely of a piece.
Throughout the book, there is nary an ounce of filler. It's chock full of drama, suspense, and intrigue...really, really chock full. Best of all, there is nothing extraneous to cause one's mind to wander, or in any way to otherwise upset the flow of the story. There are no big "holes" that make the reader wonder "where did this come from?" None of that kind of distraction.
For a first attempt, this book actually should rate about 6 stars. Another review referred to it is as "excellent?" Well...right on!
Superb...excellent...pick your own adjective.
Of late, I've had occasion to read a number of new writers, several of whom strike me as having that indefineable "stuff" that will set them apart, somewhere near the top of the heap very early on. Based on this first effort Mr. McGraw richly deserves a spot amongst this group.

Sins of a Nation Will Hogarth series edition by Don McGraw Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
How would you like to be kidnapped, hooded, restrained and find yourself in a foreign jail cell without access to your loved ones or your country? The book begins with a mysterious "rendition" and piles on more twists and turns as Don weaves a tale of power politics and raw ambition and its effects on well paid employees of the United States Government and its affiliates. Each character is developed so that their good intentions and their greed and ambition as well as their fear and willingness to break the laws of man and nature are lain bare for the reader to examine. The author leaves it to the reader to decide who to trust and who to fear and as the story takes us through its web of power politics, we are faced with reasons to dislike, distrust and perhaps trust again in each character as we learn more about them.
The book is like a parallel universe finding its anchor in realpolitik as we experience it daily. Don McGraw lets each character tell his or her story and allows us to follow each protaganist as they seek the best outcome for themselves with individual taking first priority and the country taking second priority, at least at first. The language and dialogue is basic and not all convoluted with psychobabble and unecessary embelishment. Likewise, the scenes are fleshed out to the point required to tell the story. The author does not find it necessary to "fill in the blanks" for the reader. He lets the story take us on its own merits with our participation as observers before we get to know the characters and then we take sides. How do we know if we chose the right side? How does the heroine know if she chose the right side? In whom can we confide when we bear dark secrets that can hurt those in places of insurmountable power? This mystery about who to trust forms the underlying magic of the story as it unfolds without the gratuitous sex scenes, troubling images of torture and unecessary foul language that some authors feel required to include in novels today. Yes, those things go on, and they may be happening behind closed doors in this story, but the author has realized that to sell his novel with sensationalism would detract from its uniqueness.
The tale told by Don McGraw is plausible. It could happen to you or someone you know. You may be faced with making similar decisions on who to trust as face the characters in this book. The power of our great nation is misplaced when people hide behind the "its", the faceless front of its bureaucracy. I forget who said that it is tough to write good fiction today because the truth can be so incredible. Don McGraw has made a fine go of it with "Sins Of A Nation", his first novel.
I like these stories that keep you guessing. You never know who is behind all these schemes. I really enjoy this author.
This well written political thriller has a unique way of presenting the plot. The real story is not focused on the President, candidates seeking the highest office in the land, or even an appointment to the Supreme Court. These lofty characters take a back seat to an Austin radical, his girlfriend (Campaign Coordinator), an unremarkable FBI agent. Add a poor guy locked away to never see the light of day, and you have The Sins of a Nation.
I turned off the TV and stayed up to read this one!
This is a fantastic book! Had me turning page after page to find out what happens next. If you want to read something filled with plot twist and well developed characters then this is definitely worth your time. Just when you think you know who's side you want to take in the murder case and political setting a new twist comes along and your left in awe at what could possibly happen next. This book actually made politics seems fun, while still focusing on the protagonist inner greed and their own agenda. I love when I find a book that has action and keeps me guessing until the end! Extremely well written and thought out, I seriously recommend this book to anyone looking for a page turner.
